About BICO

1890 - 1964
1966 -Present

1966 - The New Harbour Cold Store
Installed in 1966 at its new Harbour Industrial Park site, the Company began supplying cold storage facilities at the Bridgetown Port. Its storage capacity was 1,200 tones of refrigerated cargo, 200 tones chilled cargo and 1,000 tones frozen cargo for a free period of 21 days. Food stored in these cold storage facilities was palletized or placed in baskets.

1968 - New Location
In 1968 ice cream manufacturer was then discontinued at Bay Street and transferred to the new factory at Harbour Industrial Park.

1976 - New Name
On 28 December, 1976 the Company changed its name to BICO LIMITED.

1979 - Unique Business
THE BARBADOS ICE COMPANY subsequently became a sub contractor for the Barbados Port Authority, established by Government in January 1979, forming a collaboration which has worked well for both sides. This service is considered unique, for elsewhere in the Caribbean cold storage is located outside the Port, which requires that Customs clearance and other formalities be completed before products can be taken to the refrigeration area.

1979 to the Present
In recent times, the entire range of ice cream products has been rationalized and packaging re-designed whilst retaining the quality for which BICO is famous. Party Pak 5 litre containers are available in 33 flavours. The Company is no longer a manufacturer of ice. Its cold Storage capacity is now 750,000 cubic feet ranging from chilled to deep frozen temperatures.

BICO ice cream is well known and enjoyed throughout the Caribbean and is exported to nine territories including Antigua, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago.

Since 1998 a programme in restructuring has been in progress in order to prepare the Company for trade liberalization and to make all operations more efficient in the face of increasing competition. The company has now become HAACP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) compliant (i.e. a system that manages the risk associated with food safety aspects of production).BICO is a public Company listed on the Securities Exchange of Barbados with over 350 shareholders.
